Software and Electrical Controls Engineer
37 hours per week
8am to 4.30pm, Monday to Thursday, with half an hour lunch break
8am to 1pm, Friday
We are looking for a Software and Electrical Controls Engineer to join Group Rhodes expanding team.
MAIN FUNCTION & SCOPE OF THE JOB:
We design and build bespoke metal forming and clay processing equipment, from hydraulic presses to automated handling systems. The Software and Electrical Controls Engineer will design, program, and commission automation and control systems for these machines. This is a hands-on, project-based role requiring practical problem-solving across design, build, and site commissioning phases.
MAIN DUTIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
- Develop, test, and modify PLC software (typically ladder logic) for automated machinery, including safety PLC systems.
- Design control circuits and electrical panels for equipment such as presses, handling systems, grinders, mixers, and extruders.
- Produce detailed electrical schematics, panel layouts, and installation documentation in line with required safety and performance standards e.g. PLd.
- Select, configure, and integrate control hardware, drives, sensors, and instrumentation.
- Generate safety documentation, including design risk assessments, SISTEMA safety reports, and FMECA analyses.
- Support and oversee electrical installations both in-house and at customer sites.
- Commission systems onsite, including testing, fault-finding, and optimisation.
- Troubleshoot and resolve control system and installation issues promptly.
- Work closely with project managers, mechanical engineers, and customers to ensure successful project delivery.
- Provide technical support and clear documentation throughout the project lifecycle.

Qualifications
- Degree or HNC/HND in Electrical Engineering, Automation, or related discipline. (E)
- Certified Machine Safety Expert (CMSE) (D)
Skills & Knowledge
- Programmable Logic Control (PLC) skills (E)
- Excellent communication skills (E)
- Ability to work to tight deadlines (E)
- Ability to initiate new ideas/innovations where required (E)
- Full UK driver’s license and willingness to travel for site commissioning (UK and international). (D)
- Knowledge of hydraulic and mechanical control systems advantageous. (D)
- Understanding of hydraulic and pneumatic circuitry (D)
Experience
- Proven experience in PLC programming (e.g., Siemens, Allen-Bradley, or Mitsubishi). (E)
- Experience with machine safety systems (PL and SIL ratings). (E)
- Familiarity with CAD software for electrical schematics (e.g., EPLAN, AutoCAD Electrical). (D)
- Experience designing and programming control systems for complex machinery (D)
- Have a flexible approach due to short-notice travel/weekend work (D)
- Experience in hydraulic engineering (D)
